Bus Story: Even the Path Needs to be Interesting

October 1, 2010

I’m on a slightly later bus and joining the ridership this morning are two boys who clearly missed their proper bus to get to school on time. They are 10 or 11, and only somewhat concerned, but because they are together, it matters less. They talk and interact in a very identifiable way: they are Best Friends. No doubt. We get to their stop and they clamber out and I watch them make their way up the street. They are not in any hurry, they clearly have much to discuss and plan. They each take turns walking not on the sidewalk but on anything that makes the walking fun: the curb, some stones, a bench. The bus paces them for a bit so I get to enjoy watching. It makes me think about how we all move through our lives and the paths we tread. The boys have it right – the journey needs to be at least as fun as the destination. And it sure is nice to make the trip with your best friend.
