Bus Story: Dichotomy of Empty Space

June 22, 2010

As the ole 54 winds it’s way out of downtown across an elevated expressway, I can see in the windows of office buildings. It’s interesting to see people working away at a desk or even draping cloth and occasionally painting on a canvas. But more often than not, my gaze gravitates to empty offices. Sometimes they are completely vacant and blank, and others have scattered furniture, left behind by whomever was there before. I am both attracted to the promise that these spaces hold for the future and saddened at the loss they represent. Do the buildings themselves feel the same loss and do they wait, with anticipation, on being complete and useful once again?
