Bus Story: Man, Illustrated

March 9, 2010

A cold wind whips the riders waiting for the bus, surprising the city with freezing temps in March. We climb aboard and settle into the vaguely unpleasant “car heater” feeling but glad for something other than the chilly air. I’m in the back and can watch a rider join us, just before we leave downtown. I barely manage to avoid whiplash from my double-take. He’s got long hair, pony tailed to his lower back. It’s way long. Beard, torn jeans, Birkenstocks, and a non-descript but well-worn shirt complete the look. But it’s his walk that startled me: feet way out in front, head and shoulders following his torso like reluctant children on a trip to the dentist. He’s a living embodiment of R. Crumb’s drawing. Glancing at my fellow 54ers, I think I may be the only one old enough to recognize the illustration come to life. Keep on Truckin’, man!
