Bus Story: Beloved Shoes

January 22, 2010

An older gentleman sits in one of the sideways seats. He has short silvery-gray hair, almost in a flattop cut. His clothes are quite plain, nothing flashy or too colorful. My eyes are drawn to his shoes. They are traditional dress shoes by shape, with laces. But they are anything but traditional. Beautiful swirls of brown, cordovan, and deep burgundy surround the shoe’s highly polished leather. These are beloved shoes. I bet he feels better when he wears them, and probably makes others feel better about themselves. They say there is no magic left in the world. I beg to differ.
