Bus Story: Thankful for the Good Ones

November 23, 2009

The 54 is crowded as we all head home. A very befuddled woman with big costume jewelry sits in a seat with some of her equally sparkly handbags and clutch purses next to her. Yes, multiples. A man with classic black Buddy Holly glasses and a headset gingerly sits next to her as she sweeps her bags into her arms. She asks to borrow his phone. Deer-in-headlights, he pulls out his cellphone, she reads a number to him, and he gives her the phone. She has a long, very loud conversation that ends with her discovery that she’s on the wrong bus. With the man’s help, she finds her way. And he is finally left to his music, and with a quiet smile of a good guy, he joins the rest of us as we head home. Good on you, Buddy Holly Dude, we need more like you.
